Download Co-Convenor’s Report on our activities in 2010-11 This report was presented at our Annual General Meeting in December.

AAN was established in 2005 to support and strengthen connections between African and non African Australians, and between Australia and Africa.

Our aims are:

  • to support mixed African and non African Australian families, including adoptive families
  • to foster and encourage bilingualism amongst African-Australian children
  • to foster communication and connection between African and non African Australians in diverse ways, including dialogue and discussion (seminars, workshops, conferences, meetings etc), arts, media, and social functions.
  • to develop personal and community connections between groups and individuals in Australia and Africa
  • to actively resist racism and support a multicultural Australia

AAN is currently being managed by a volunteer management committee of 6 people. There are currently vacancies only for African heritage committee members.

Projects and activities
Celebrating African Australians: Our regular social functions celebrate African communities in Sydney. In November 2006 we hosted the first of our regular picnics, and in December we threw a hugely successful end of year fundraising party. See Events for details of what’s coming up.

Seminar: The first event organized by A.A.N was a seminar in Sydney in March 2006 on mixed African and non African relationships and families. The seminar was co-sponsored by the African Communities Council of NSW and featured speakers from four African organizations as well as two speakers from A.A.N.

Supporting relationships: Cross-cultural relationships can bring challenges as well as rewards. A.A.N members are setting up a support group to assist people in dealing with these challenges.
