In October 2007 Australian African Network Inc. launched an online survey to gather more information about our community. The survey is now offline.
As of November 2008, 59/75 respondents had completed the survey, representing 18 African countries as well as Anglo-Australia and several other ethnic backgrounds. Since November another 12 people have added their responses, bringing the total to 69/87. Although it’s a small survey, it’s nonetheless important. Little research has been done into mixed African/non-African relationships in Australia and so this survey contributes valuable data.
The majority of respondents were non-African women. 37 people were parents of mixed children, but there was a high separation rate. Only 18 of those 37 were still in mixed relationships. This confirms observations that a lot of mixed kids are being raised by non-African single parents, so it is little surprise – but of concern – that the main isues identifed by the survey were lack of connection to African community and culture, cultural isues, and racism and prejudice.
We asked what activities people would most like AAN to do, and the overwhelming response was: picnics! Other popular activities were seminars on political and cultural issues, support groups, lobbying and advocacy, and parties. Keep an eye on this website for updates on the next picnic and other AAN events.
