Working it out

Working it Out: Stories from African-Australian Relationships is a new resource for people in mixed African-Australian relationships based on interviews with fifteen people about their personal experiences. The booklet includes stories, links and suggestions on a range of issues such as parenting, finances, problem solving and cultural difference.

The resource was funded by a grant from University of Western Sydney and produced by AAN Committee members Annie Stopford, Jill Sergeant and Cornel Robinson. A limited number of print copies are available or you can download it here. Working it Out was launched at the AAN fundraising dinner on Friday 27 November.

Let’s dance!

The next event on AAN’s calendar is a night of dining and dancing on Saturday 5 September. A group of us are planning to go dancing at Taylors on Central, a club that has a regular African music night.

We’ll meet up for dinner at around 8.00pm somewhere in Sury Hills – walking distance from the club, then move on to the club at around 10.30pm. You can join us for dinner or dancing or both.

Taylors on Central is at 84 – 86 Mary St, Surry Hills, Sydney.

Happy 2009 and 08 wrap-up

AAN wishes a Happy New Year to all our members and supporters.

While our regular picnics will be starting up again soon, we haven’t yet made plans for activities in 2009 – we will be doing so at our first meeting for the year in Mid-February, with our newly elected committee.

At our AGM on December 12 we welcomed new committee members, re-elected some old ones and farewelled one of our Co-Convenors. The new committee is:

Non African Co-Convenor: Annie Stopford

African Co-Convenor – vacant. Thanks to Gloria Davidson, one of AAN’s founding members, for all her work in this role. Gloria has had to resign due to other commitments, but we know she’ll stay a staunch supporter of AAN.

Secretary: Suzanne O’Garey

Treasurer: Jill Sergeant

Ordinary members: Mohamed Dukuly, Nicole Cunningham, Cornel Robinson, Liz Tinney

There are still vacancies on the committee – if you’d like to be involved, email admin@australianafricannetwork.org.au.
